Despite his earlier warning to Kiera at Stockwell youth centre that his presence would make the situation worse, Sebastian succumbed to the urge to give his condolences to his sister.

He stared at the front door a while before he summoned up the courage to knock on it.

Expecting her to look dishevelled and broken, he was surprised to see that she was smartly dressed, with perfectly styled hair and make-up. He kept his surprise in check, acknowledging how different people responded when confronted with significant loss. After giving her a sad look, he said, ‘Evie. I’m so sorry.’

Evie looked him up and down, her top lip curling up slightly. ‘What do you want?’

Her reaction was unsurprising. They hadn’t been on the best of terms before Ralphie’s death. She’d be happy to make the brother she disliked accountable in some way.

Still, he tried. ‘Is there anything… anything at all… I can do?’

‘Where were you yesterday? All night?’

‘I’m sorry. My phone was off.’ He took a step forward. ‘But I can help now.’

‘Help how? He’s dead.’ Tears sprang up in her eyes. She wiped at them, smudging mascara across her face. ‘Ralphie’s dead. So what actual use are you any more?’

Sebastian took a deep breath. Here it was… the blame. But had Sebastian’s refusal to make the thievery charges go away at Ralphie’s university contributed to his death? Really? He doubted it had anything to do with it.

He exhaled. ‘Please… Evie, if there’s anything—’

Max stepped alongside her. He was also dressed smartly and looked freshly shaven. ‘Ha! You?’

‘Max, I’m—’

‘Piss off,’ Max said and slammed the door in Sebastian’s face.

He sighed.

Yes, they’d experienced trauma, but their brutal words were hardly out of character. They could be in the best of spirits, and he’d still get it both barrels.

He turned and sighed again.

Maybe this was it for him and his sister?

After all, with Ralphie gone, he’d been left with no route back in.
